Imagine a world without choice.

A world in which there is only one way to go, one possible response, one thing to do next. Unfortunately, we don’t have to look very far to find places where people’s choices are restricted or taken away.

We cannot choose everything that happens to us. But within what is given, there may still be room for choice.

And we don’t always notice it.

We have our familiar ways of moving through life, our habits, our preferences, our automatic responses. Sometimes they serve us beautifully. Sometimes we keep doing what we know simply because… well, it’s what we know.

We tend to think of choosing as something that happens in our mind: we consider, weigh up, decide. But choice is also deeply embodied.

Our body knows how to pause before acting. It can move towards something or away from it. It can expand or contract, follow a direction or change it, stay with something or let it go. It can respond to what is happening now rather than simply repeat what it has done before.

And perhaps this is where choice begins: not necessarily with a big decision, but with the discovery that there is more than one possibility.

On the dance floor, we can practise this in the most immediate way. What if I pause? What if I take another direction? What if I do more — or less? What if I follow this impulse… or don’t?

There is nothing to get right. We explore, we notice, we try things out. And little by little, we may discover that our repertoire is larger than we thought.

Over the coming classes, WHAT IF…? – The Art of Choice will be our thread. Each dance will approach it from a different angle, exploring some of the resources our moving body already has to help us notice possibilities and choose.

Because sometimes freedom begins with something very small:

What if I could move differently?
