The Art of Choice
WHAT IF… I LET GO

We hold on to so many things in our daily lives, often without even noticing how tightly we’re holding. And perhaps that’s simply part of being human. We hold on because we care, because we want to do well, because we’re trying to find our way through life.
In a difficult conversation or a tense meeting, I may tell myself to relax, to stay calm. Yet my body tells another story. I’m holding my breath, my shoulders are tense, my belly is tight. My mind has decided to relax, but my body hasn’t followed. And that’s okay. Sometimes our bodies need a little more time than our minds. What if I choose to pay attention to how I’m holding myself together, and explore whether I can soften just a little?
Our days are filled with responsibilities and commitments. Many of them we’ve chosen freely, and we don’t necessarily want to give them up. They matter to us. Yet sometimes we carry them with so much effort that they begin to weigh heavily on us. What if I choose to loosen my grip just a little, without letting go of what really matters to me?
We want to do things well. We prepare, organise, pay attention to details, try to get everything right. There’s something beautiful in caring about what we do. And somewhere along the way, we may begin to tighten our grip, adding more effort, more control, more tension. What if I choose to experiment with doing things with a little less effort, and discover what might still be enough?
And sometimes life simply doesn’t unfold as we expected. Plans change, people react differently than we hoped, things don’t go our way. We may find ourselves holding on to how things should have been. After all, letting go of an expectation isn’t always easy, especially when something really matters to us. What if I choose to loosen my grip on my expectations, without having to abandon what I hoped for?
Perhaps letting go isn’t an all-or-nothing affair. Between holding tightly and letting go completely, there is a whole continuum of possibilities. We can hold a little more, a little less, soften, adjust, release just enough.
And perhaps this is where choice becomes possible: not in having to choose between holding on and letting go, but in discovering all the possibilities in between.
In our next Open Floor class, we’ll explore this continuum through movement, bringing our attention to the ways we hold tension in our bodies and experimenting with small movements of release. Not to correct ourselves or become better versions of who we are, but simply to discover what else might be possible.
The dance floor becomes our laboratory for the bigger dance of life.
This will be the first of two explorations of Release. In the second, we’ll turn our attention more towards the emotional dimension of letting go.
I’m looking forward to meet you, us on the floor
