Gestalt

(for german and french translation scroll down)

My path towards Gestalt therapy grew naturally out of my work with movement.

Open Floor was co-created by four founders and has been shaped by different bodies of knowledge and practice. One of its founders, Andrea Juhan, studied Gestalt Awareness Practice in Esalen (US) and deliberately brought this influence into the development of the Open Floor curriculum. Present-moment awareness, embodied experience and attention to relationship are therefore not simply similarities I later discovered between Open Floor and Gestalt; they are part of a connection that was there from the beginning.

So when my own curiosity eventually led me to train in Analytic Gestalt Therapy at the Bonner Institut für Analytische Gestalttherapie, I was not entering entirely unfamiliar territory.

For many years, through Open Floor, I had already been exploring awareness, the present moment, our relationship with ourselves and others, and the possibility of discovering new choices through experience.

My Gestalt therapy training has given me another perspective from which to explore these processes, and the opportunity to engage more deeply with Gestalt in its own right.

What I discovered there felt both new and strangely familiar.

Gestalt therapy is a distinct humanistic and experiential approach to psychotherapy that developped in the mid-20th century. Rather than focusing primarily on interpreting the past, it pays particular attention to how we experience ourselves, others and the world in the present moment. Awareness, relationship and the interplay between body, emotions, thoughts and environment are central to the approach.

Life is movement. We are continually affected and moved by what happens within us and around us — by our feelings, our relationships, our needs and the situations we encounter. Sometimes we move with what life brings; sometimes we hold back, get stuck or find ourselves repeating familiar ways of responding.

Gestalt invites us to become more aware of these movements. When habitual or automatic ways of responding become visible, new possibilities and choices may emerge.

In a session, we begin with whatever is in the foreground for you that day. We talk, we listen, we notice.

Attention may turn towards words, feelings, thoughts, bodily sensations, images or gestures. Sometimes slowing down and staying with something for a little longer allows us to notice what we might otherwise pass over.

Gestalt does not seek to tell you who you are or what you should do. It offers a space in which you can meet yourself with greater awareness, explore what is present and discover your own ways of responding to what moves you.

For me, Gestalt is first and foremost an encounter. I am not standing outside your process as a neutral observer. We meet as two people, both present in the relationship.

What you bring may touch me too, and I pay attention to what arises between us. I bring my own presence and awareness into our work while accompanying you in exploring your experience, your resources, your patterns and the possibilities that may emerge.

The relationship between Gestalt and Open Floor is therefore not simply a connection I discovered for myself. Gestalt principles have been deliberately woven into Open Floor from its beginnings.

They remain two distinct practices, and I value each in its own right. In my Open Floor work, movement is at the heart of the exploration; in my Gestalt sessions, dialogue and relationship are central. Yet they share an attention to present-moment experience, awareness, embodied experience, relationship, contact and choice.

As I continue my Gestalt training, I find myself understanding some of these shared foundations in new ways. This naturally informs the way I accompany people — whether through movement or through dialogue.

Perhaps this is also what BornToBeMoved has come to mean to me: we move, and we are moved. And sometimes, by becoming more aware of what moves us, something new can begin to move.

Was fühle ich? Was braucht gerade meine Aufmerksamkeit? Was brauche ich?
