June 22nd at Helen’s dance

104 Av. Victor Hugo, 1750 Luxembourg
10.00-11.30

“Let there be spaces in your togetherness, and let the winds of the heavens dance between you. Love one another but make not a bond of love: Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls. Fill each other’s cup but drink not from one cup. Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf. Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone, alike the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music. Give your hearts, but not into each other’s keeping. For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts. And stand together, yet not too near together: For the pillars of the temple stand apart, And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other’s shadow.”
― Khalil Gibran, The Prophet

We all need space. Space outside and space inside. And we live in communities. Most human beings are not made to lead a hermit’s life. We are social beings. Within our community we yearn for connection at the same time as we feel a deep longing to be on our own and to have space for ourselves.

And even when we are connected to others, we want to preserve our distance and space. Sometimes more, sometimes less. It’s a subtle alternation, even coexistence, between expansion and contraction that most of us seek in our relationships.

How can we preserve our space and how can we offer space to the other?
How can we sense the other’s desire for space and respect it?
How do we articulate this dance that is meant to be benevolent, that welcomes the other, that listens to the other without us imposing?
How do we articulate this dance that celebrates the space between?
How can we get in touch without being touched? Get in touch without touching?
How can we be listened to without being commented on? Listen without commenting?
How can we be supported without being ‘helped’? Support without “helping”?
How can we establish this connection while preserving our space and the space of the other in mutual respect?

We might find the answers in dance, if we embody our emotions, our fears, our desires, our hunger for connection, our hunger for solitude, our needs to expand and to contract…
