Meditation Cycle

“To move is to create life.
To be still is to create love.
To still, and still moving — that is everything.”
— Chinese proverb
There is a kind of silence that is not the absence of sound,
but the presence of everything.
In Open Floor we call this The Meditation Cycle — a simple, profound journey through sitting, walking, and dancing as gateways to awareness.
It was first inspired by shikantaza, a Zen form of meditation meaning “just sitting.”
Open Floor teacher and co-founder Lori Saltzman began exploring how this radical simplicity — presence without goal — could unfold in movement.
What happens when we bring meditation off the cushion and into the body?
When stillness and motion are not opposites, but partners in awareness?
In the Meditation Cycle, we alternate between stillness and movement — sitting to settle, walking to awaken, dancing to embody.
Each phase is a way of paying attention:
- Sitting, we notice the quiet life within — breath, heartbeat, the subtle weight of being.
- Walking, we feel the rhythm of the ground meeting us, step by step.
- Dancing, we let awareness expand — the pulse of music, the swirl of emotion, the mind’s spaciousness in motion.
Then we return to sitting — not as the same person who began, but as someone slightly changed, more attuned, more whole.
Each cycle deepens the conversation between body and awareness.
Stillness becomes movement, movement becomes stillness.
The dance becomes a form of meditation — not about escaping the world, but about entering it more fully.
This practice invites us to just be — with whatever is here: breath, joy, fatigue, emotion, or peace.
To let movement be prayer.
To let stillness be dance.
To meet the mystery of being alive, again and again.
Come and join us on a common floor and in a common dance!
Good music is going to support us in our explorations.
