Dancing with Gratitude

Gratitude is what steadies me when the world feels like it’s trembling.
Thinking with gratitude about the moments that have filled me with joy allows me to stay positive, even when the world around me seems to be unraveling. When I remember all that is beautiful and allow myself to feel grateful for it, I don’t lose heart—I find the courage to keep moving, to keep engaging with a turbulent world. Gratitude is seeing light even when much around us seems dark.
Sometimes, gratitude comes after loss. We grieve something or someone who is no longer here, but in remembering what they brought into our lives, our hearts can be filled—not just with sorrow, but with love, with appreciation, with gratitude.
To be grateful is an invaluable gift. It allows us to stop chasing more and instead find joy in what is. It is the sensation of now, even when what we cherish belongs to the past.
In this class, we will explore how gratitude moves us, how it shapes our breath, our gestures, our presence. How do we move when gratitude fills us? How are we moved when we allow ourselves to embody appreciation? Let’s dance with what we have, with what we hold dear, and let gratitude take form in movement.
Some poetry to inspire you?
Gift
by Mary Oliver
Be still, my soul, and steadfast.
Earth and heaven are both still watching
though time is draining from the clock
and your walk, that was confident and quick,
has become slow.
So, be slow if you must, but let
the heart still play its true part.
Love still as once you loved, deeply
and without patience.
Let God and the world
know you are grateful.
That the gift has been given.
For the Live Unlived
by John O’Donohue
I would love to live
Like a river flows,
Carried by the surprise
Of its own unfolding.
And yet I know,
Each loss, each letting go
Reveals something
Silent inside me.
What remains unseen,
What remains unlived,
What never came to be,
Is still a part of me,
Still shaping,
Still guiding,
Still a gift.
The Guesthouse
by Rumi
This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
Come and join us on a common floor and in a common dance!
Good music is going to support us in our explorations.
