In Open Floor, the practice of Activate and Settle invites us to move with the rhythms of life—the rising and falling, the natural cycles of energy and rest. It is an exploration of how we can regulate our nervous system, returning to a state of balance and harmony even amidst life’s uncertainties.

To learn to activate is to upregulate—to energize, mobilize, and step into action with vitality and intention. To learn to settle is to downregulate—not into collapse, but into a state that is awake, receptive, and relational. Together, these capacities help us meet life’s challenges with resilience, grounding us in both strength and softness.

When we train ourselves to activate, we build the physical and emotional resources to take risks, move forward, and stand steady. When we cultivate the ability to settle, we discover the confidence to release tension, de-stress, and find calm without losing presence. This dynamic interplay ensures we stay true to ourselves, guided by the authentic impulses that arise within.

At the heart of this practice is the breath. The breath anchors us in the present moment, allowing us to sense when to rise and when to fall. As Thich Nhat Hanh beautifully said:

“Your body is your first home. Breathing in, I arrive in my body, breathing out, I am home.”

When we follow the natural rhythm of activation and settling, we awaken a vitality that keeps us connected—to ourselves, to others, and to the world. It is a practice of trust and harmony, where each breath brings us closer to the fullness of being alive.
