Towards and Away is an innate movement that we use all the time, both in our bodies and in our emotions. It describes how we naturally move towards things we want and away from things we don’t want or find uncomfortable. This instinct to approach or avoid is built into us from a very young age, even before we’re born. In fact, Towards and Away is the seed of all our movement, the foundation from which we navigate the world physically and emotionally.

We experience Towards and Away every day. It shows up in small ways, like reaching out to someone we care about or stepping back from a stressful situation. Our habits of moving towards or away are often ingrained, shaped by our past experiences, relationships, and culture.

In Open Floor movement, we can bring attention to how we use Towards and Away. In these moments, we can ask ourselves:

  • Am I afraid of moving towards because it feels too risky, or because I was taught not to?
  • Do I remain in certain situations simply because I don’t know how to move away?
  • Am I stuck in place because the idea of both moving towards and away feels too frightening?
  • Am I unclear in my signals, unable to decide whether I want to move towards or away?

These reflections help us uncover where we are stuck in old patterns, offering us the chance to bring more freedom and choice into our responses rather than simply reacting out of habit.

Towards and Away helps us with important life skills like setting boundaries, making decisions, and connecting with others. By exploring this movement, we can bring more balance and clarity to our everyday lives, making choices that feel right for us. And in Open Floor practice, we can explore Towards and Away in a playful way, allowing curiosity and creativity to lead us in discovering new possibilities for movement and connection.

Some poetry to inspire you?

The Dare
By Anne Sexton

Today I dared to walk
through the doors of a stranger’s home.
I dared to sit at their table
and drink their bitter coffee.
I dared to hold the cup steady,
even though my hands were trembling.
I dared to meet their gaze
and not look away.

Their words hung in the air,
and I dared to listen,
even as each sentence dropped
like stones into the quiet between us.
I dared to reach out and take the risk
of touching something real,
something fragile,
something that could break us both.

Stufen
by Hermann Hesse

and last but not least have alook at this and enjoy
