Why dance?

I’ve started the new year dancing. I had the privilege of taking part in an online class on 1rst of January with one of my former teachers. When he welcomed us, he asked a question that is often asked, but which is becoming increasingly relevant at a time when the world seems to be in a tailspin: Why do we dance? How can my dance have any influence on what is happening around me, on the scourges that plague us, on the injustices that are perpetuated, on the pettiness and hatred of the human race, on the future of our earth?
I could say that I dance because it does me good, because movement does my body good, because I love music and dance and music set me free.
And those are more than valid reasons!
And there’s more! The dance we practise, the dance of mindfulness of consciousness, takes us far beyond a brief sensation of well-being.
It’s a question of awareness!
If we move while being aware of what’s going on in our body, if we listen to our body and follow its needs, our body will take us on a much deeper journey.
The body calls the heart, the body calls the spirit and the spirit calls the soul. At the same time, the spirit calls the body, the soul calls the heart… and so a multitude of connections are created. And all in full awareness.
Dance allows us to understand the heart, it opens the mind and it makes the soul whisper. This openness to all the dimensions of our being allows us to be more open to those around us. If we succeed in being fully aware of ourselves, we will be able to open up to the world around us, to empathise, to forgive, to show solidarity and to commit ourselves to causes in which we believe. If we are able to listen to ourselves, we will be able to listen to others. Knowing ourselves allows us to get to know others better, to open up to them and not be afraid of them. And that’s essential, because fear is most often the source of hatred and violence.
Starting this journey in our immediate environment is a good place to start. And it’s only the beginning, the journey can then expand…
That’s why I dance. What about you?
